The level of sex education for students varies greatly from state to state. Other states require that sex education focus primarily, or even solely, on abstinence. These differences in curriculum also create huge differences in the quality of sex education that American students receive. Let’s take a look at some of the US cities that have chosen to offer the best possible sex education to its students.

Colorado state policy has specific guidelines for any sexual health education program introduced into Colorado schools. A school district that offers these programs must maintain content standards for the curriculum based on scientific research. Curriculum content standards must also be age appropriate, culturally sensitive and medically accurate according to published authorities upon which medical professionals generally rely.

The Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment has a grant program for school districts that choose to teach sexuality and sexual health education. The purpose of this program is to provide funding for public schools and school districts which allows them to create and implement programs that fully follow those guidelines. An extensive program outline known as ” Youth Sexual Health in Colorado: A Call to Action” also exists to fulfill the needs of educators. Since the implementation of this lesson plan throughout the state, teen STD and pregnancy rates have decreased. Most school districts throughout Colorado utilize this specific program. It has proven to be a valuable and effective form of educating the state’s youth in protecting their sexual health.

Once a person has become sexually active, it is important to consider STD testing. Many times, STDs do not show any obvious signs or symptoms and testing for STDs and HIV can be the only way to accurately know the status of your sexual health. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommend that all sexually active persons be tested at least once in their life for HIV and STDs. There are many options for testing throughout the state of Colorado.
