Should we get tested together?
Definitely. Routine HIV screening is recommended by the CDC and there's no reason not to do it. The first thing you'll want to do is have The Talk. Let's call your new partner a "he", to make this easy. Ask if he's been tested for STDs. If he says "Yes, of course." but can't name the diseases he's been tested for, it's likely that he hasn't been tested. Explain that it's important to have a fresh start so you two can be sure you're negative. It's the right thing for your health and the right thing for your relationship.

Should I Get Tested?
Most people think, "Well, I go to my doctor for a yearly check up. I'm sure I've been tested for STDs." Well, not exactly. Most doctors do not screen for sexually transmitted diseases unless you speak up and ask for a test. And, you guessed it. Not very many of us ask for the tests. But here's the kicker: the doctors who screen, don't necessarily test for all of the common STDs....like genital herpes and syphilis. 19 million new cases and people aren't getting tested by their doctors. Something isn't adding up.
