University of Georgia sponsors a condom fashion show

Michelle Sobel Oct. 26, 2011

Colleges and Universities across the county have been trying to get more creative with how they increase awareness of sexual health matters on campus. For example, students from the University of Georgia (UGA) recently hosted a fashion show where their peers made and modeled clothing created out of condoms.

Red and Black, a UGA news source, reported that the event was sponsored by a student group called the Sexual Health Helpers, in an effort to get the topic of safer sex out in the open in a fun and creative way.

"Every dress has a theme and every theme relates to some topic of sexual health. It’s a way to spread awareness about various subjects like talking about sex with your partner, HIV/AIDS and other types of STDs," said model and designer Shericia Ross.

While this may seem like a unique concept, it has been done before. SodaHead.com reports that Planned Parenthood of Central Ohio has been hosting the "Condom Couture Fashion Show" since 2008. The event sells tickets to the general public that range from $45 to $500 each.
