University hosts 'sexual fair' to educate students on STD prevention

Christopher Lynch, MD Oct. 27, 2011

While many colleges and universities host events that are meant to educate students on the dangers of sexually transmitted diseases (STDs), few go as all-out as the University of Florida. Alligator, a Florida news source, reports that the school's chapter of VOX: Voices for Planned Parenthood branch recently hosted a "sexual health fair," complete with games, prizes and arts and crafts.

"When it comes to sexual safety, we can't talk about it enough because it is obviously still an epidemic in America to have unsafe sex," said Devon Faria, 19, an anthropology sophomore and internal vice president of Pride Student Union, quoted by the news provider.

The fair included free HIV testing at the student union, to encourage students to learn more about their personal sexual health. Students told Alligator that they hoped this event would encourage more open dialogue about sexual issues.

HerCampus.com states that one in four people under the age of 21 in the U.S. is infected with an STD. This statistic highlights the need for more education on college campuses about the dangers of these potentially life-threatening infections.
