Trojan reports on the status of sexual health on college campuses

Christopher Lynch, MD Oct. 19, 2011

Recently, the annual Trojan Health Report Card was released, ranking colleges based on their efforts to educate students on how to prevent sexually transmitted diseases (STDs). For the second year in a row, Columbia University was number one, making them the first school to get the top spot twice.

"Columbia's focus on sexual health is a clear priority on campus, supported whole-heartedly by the students, faculty and administration," said Bert Sperling, president of Sperling's BestPlaces, which helped field the study.

What makes Columbia's sexual education program so exemplary is the level of student involvement. They have high rates of HIV testing, make contraceptives widely available and offer a website where students can anonymously ask sexual health questions.

Chicago State and Brigham Young University were among the lowest-ranked schools, along with the U.S. Air Force Academy.

Since the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports that STD rates are highest among people between the ages of 15 and 24, it's important that colleges make sure that their students are getting all the information thy need to keep themselves protected.
