Technology gurus receive safe-sex talk at SXSW festival
Michelle Sobel Mar. 17, 2011
A recent article published by MSNBC refers to Texas' annual South by Southwest (SXSW) festival as "spring break for geeks," due to numerous reports of sexual liaisons among the attendees.
According to the publication, about 11,000 people from around the country attend the event to introduce their new technological products and exchange industry information.
Internet sex educator Violet Blue told the news source, "There's a lot of sex and a lot of hooking up," among festival-goers and "it needs to be addressed." Blue noted that she hosted a Sexual Survival for Geeks seminar on the first night of this year's event.
Her presentation included basic information about safe sex and how to address potential health concerns if individuals are being intimate with more than one partner.
People who have sex with multiple partners have a higher risk of contracting and spreading sexually transmitted diseases (STDs).
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 29 percent of males and 11 percent of females have sex with 15 or more different people over their lifetimes.
Individuals who have intercourse with multiple partners may consider using online testing services to detect STDs.
