Survey: UK teens taking more sexual health risks
Christopher Lynch, MD Sep. 28, 2010
A new survey conducted by Superdrug, a high-street store, has found that 1 and 3 teenagers living in the UK have had at least three sexual partners by the age of 16, TimesOfIndia.com reports.
A total of 1,200 individuals aged 16 to 22 years participated in the questionnaire, and of the group, 60 percent said they didn't use a condom during sex. Also, 10 percent of the respondents had sex without knowing their partner's name.
Furthermore, officials who ran the survey discovered that two out of three young people said they'd rather have a good sexual experience than worry about the risk of pregnancy or contracting a sexually transmitted disease (STD).
By publishing these findings, UK health officials hope that the government will take more initiatives to inform young people about staying healthy when having sex, and about centers where they can be screened or treated for STDs, according to the news source.
Young people who have unprotected sex could be putting themselves and their partners at a higher risk of contracting an STD. For those who are concerned about their sexual health, purchasing online STD testing services can be a good option.
According to the Office for National Statistics, in 2007, approximately 122,000 new cases of chlamydia were diagnosed among the country's residents.
