Study: Supplement use improves survival rates in mice with herpes

Lisa Oldson, MD Jul. 29, 2010

Further advancements have been made in the development of a probiotic-based supplement, which would improve immune system and help and protect the body against some viruses, including herpes.

Herpes is currently an incurable infection that is contracted through unprotected sexual intercourse. If left untreated, people who have herpes can become more susceptible to other sexually transmitted diseases (STDs). In the U.S., one out of every six individuals aged 14 to 49 years tests positive for the infection, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

During a recent trial, a team of researchers used mice that were infected with a strain of herpes to determine how effective the compounds were against the virus. The team treated one group of mice with the supplement and compared the results to virus-carrying animals that weren't given the treatment.

The team discovered a higher survival rate among those who had been administered the supplement as opposed to the herpes control group.

The researchers concluded that these findings could lead to clinic trials in the future, which could further develop supplements taken to improve immune system health. Furthermore, these advancements could help slow the spread of herpes and other STDs that affect the immune system.ADNFCR-3476-ID-19913936-ADNFCR
