Singles over 50 believe sex is important for their health

Michelle Sobel Oct. 12, 2011

Lately there has been a great deal of discussion regarding older people and sexual health. Individuals over the age of 50 are contracting sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) at an increased rate, suggesting that this population may be in need of more education regarding how to protect themselves against developing an infection.

Recently, a survey conducted by OurTime.com, a dating website, found that 97 percent of singles over the age of 50 believe that regular sex is good for their health.

"Many young people think that once you hit 50, your body image automatically changes and your sex life immediately takes a hit, but this couldn't be further from the truth," said Gail Saltz M.D., OurTime.com's relationship expert and psychiatrist.

Thankfully, the majority of this population feel more comfortable talking opening about sex with their partner than they did when they were younger. Another positive figure was that 75 percent of respondents said that they practice safer sex to protect against STDs.

These findings suggest that individuals over the age of 50 should not be discounted among people who need regular information regarding sexual health.
