Sexual satisfaction an important part of a happy marriage for seniors

Christopher Lynch, MD Nov. 30, 2011

Researchers at the Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University conducted as study which reveals that senior citizens are more likely to report feeling happy if they are sexually active within their marriage.

Authors of the study surveyed 238 married people who were at least 60 years old and discovered that about 40 percent of those who were not having sex reported being generally happy, compared to 60 percent of older adults who had engaged in intercourse during the previous month.

"Highlighting the relationship between sex and happiness will help us in developing and organizing specific sexual health interventions for this growing segment of our population," said researcher Adrienne Jackson, P.T., Ph.D., M.P.A.

The team said that their findings may help open lines of communication between the elderly and healthcare professionals regarding sex and quality of life. Additionally, the research may lead to the development of strategies to encourage older adults to engage in healthy sexual activity.

It's important to note that even seniors need to practice safer sex by using condoms and getting tested regularly for sexually transmitted diseases.
