Sexual health charity creates PSAs aimed at the middle-aged

Lisa Oldson, MD Jan. 19, 2011

While many ad campaigns about sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) target the 16- to 24-year-old crowd, a new series of public service announcements (PSAs) in the UK is targeting individuals 40 and up, according to the BBC.

Created by the Family Planning Association (FPA), the campaign consists of a series of posters depicting men and women in particularly tacky or outdated clothing from the 1970s.

Each poster's caption says, "Remember wearing this?" and next to a photo of a condom adds, "Then remember to wear this!"

Health authorities like the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the National Institutes of Health agree that the risk of contracting STDs is still quite significant in middle age and later life.

Mature Americans are likely to underestimate the possibility that they will contract an infection through unprotected sex, according to the CDC. The agency adds that lack of knowledge about STDs and the ease with which they can be mistaken for chronic, age-related conditions means middle-aged and mature individuals should get regular sexual health exams.

Individuals who suspect that they have an STD may consider looking into online testing services immediately.

The CDC estimates that nearly a fifth of HIV-positive Americans are aged 50 or older.
