RAINN day 2011 aimed at reducing sexual attacks on college campuses

Christopher Lynch, MD Sep. 23, 2011

According to the website CrisisConnectionInc.org, a person is sexually assaulted every 45 minutes in the U.S. One in 15 victims will contract a sexually transmitted disease (STD) as a result of their attack.

To combat this issue, college students across the country are partnering with the Rape Abuse and Incest National Network (RAINN) for RAINN day, aimed at educating their peers on this issue and how to protect their sexual health.

"Because of our location in the middle of downtown Memphis, ranked number one in violent crimes for major US cities by the FBI, we realize how important it is to raise awareness about sexual violence on campus and provide accurate information to our students on how to be safe,” said University of Tennessee student Dee Helton.

RAINN Day will consist of a host of events, from round table discussions and how to avoid being at risk of sexual attack, to safe sex information talks and rape crisis support groups. College students are four times more likely to be assaulted than any other age group, suggesting that this population is in need of more education regarding how to protect themselves against dangerous situations.
