Ozzy Osbourne promotes regular STD screenings

Christopher Lynch, MD Jun. 30, 2010

Ozzy Osbourne, the self-proclaimed king of darkness, has put his years of rock 'n' roll experience into a health column, which is featured in Britain's Sunday Times magazine.

Waking up in a different city every night led the lead singer of Black Sabbath and his bandmates to end each tour the same way - with a visit to a treatment clinic for sexually transmitted diseases, according to SifyNews.com. A shot of penicillin, typically used to cure gonorrhea, was not uncommon for members of the group after returning home from the road, which prevented the spread of the disease to their long-term partners.

In 2008, more than 336,000 of people were diagnosed with gonorrhea in the U.S., according to Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The agency also reported that from 2004 to 2008, the number of gonorrhea cases increased by 5.6 percent in individuals aged 15 to 19 years old, while the number of people with the STD decreased in all other age groups.

Despite his hardcore exterior, Osbourne admitted that the occasional attractive nurse would make these hospital trips rather embarrassing, the news source reports.

People who have sex could be putting themselves and their partners at a higher risk of contracting a sexually transmitted disease. Individuals who are concerned about their health, but are uncomfortable with going to an STD clinic, can benefit from purchasing online testing kits.ADNFCR-3476-ID-19867822-ADNFCR
