Organization gives out free condoms to educate people on overpopulation

Christopher Lynch, MD Sep. 30, 2011

People who are looking to protect themselves against developing a sexually transmitted disease (STD) should consider practicing safer sex by using condoms. Lowering STD risk is a good reason to use condoms, but they may also prevent unplanned pregnancy. Recently, The Center for Biological Diversity launched a campaign to hand out free condoms in an effort to increase awareness of overpopulation.

"As the world population closes in on 7 billion, there's never been a better time to talk about overpopulation and the species extinction crisis, and our Endangered Species Condoms are one of the best conversation starters out there," said Amy Harwood, the Center's overpopulation campaign coordinator.

The population has doubled since 1970, and the United Nation estimates that it will hit 7 billion by October 31. This has caused growing extinction rates among plants and animals, as humans take over more of the planet.

The organization claims that without easy access to birth control, the population will reach 15 billion by mid-century, and the planet may not be able to sustain that many people.
