Online social networking may lead to risky sexual behavior among homeless youth

Lisa Oldson, MD Feb. 28, 2011

Homeless young people who use social networking sites are likely to participate in sexual behavior that may put them at risk of contracting sexually transmitted diseases (STDs), according to research published in the journal AIDS and Behavior.

A survey of 210 homeless teens and young adults between the ages of 13 and 24 found that eight out of every 10 respondents had used online social networking media.

While the questionnaire found that more than half of the participants had been tested for STDs, about 20 percent of sexually active respondents reported having found a sex partner online within the past three months. Furthermore, about 10 percent of sexually active participants said that they had engaged in exchange sex, which involves the trade of sex for food, drugs or shelter.

Researchers said that both of these behaviors are associated with an increased risk of contracting STDs.

The study's authors said they believe that networking sites may increase sexual risk behaviors since they facilitate an easy way to meet new sex partners, but that the technology can also be used as a prevention tool to communicate safe-sex practices.

Online testing services are available to individuals who would like to be screened for STDs.
