New condoms may offer improved STD protection for men with erectile dysfunction

Lisa Oldson, MD Apr. 22, 2011

Men who struggle to maintain an erection during sex may have a greater risk of contracting or spreading sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) due to condom slippage. However, a new prophylactic that claims to enhance erections may help some men avoid both of these problems, according to a recent article published by CBS News.

The news provider explained that some people have begun referring to the products as "Viagra condoms." The makers of Durex condoms currently hold the patent for the multipurpose prophylactics, although the manufacturers have not revealed whether they plan to sell the contraceptives in the U.S., the news organization reported.

The condoms contain a gel lining that covers the inside of the latex, which may increase blood flow to the penis, the news source said.

Sexual medicine expert Irwin Goldstein told the news provider that the condoms "will have to be proven to be safe and effective compared to oral PDE 5 inhibitors" such as Viagra.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, inconsistent and improper use of latex contraceptives are among the most common causes of the spread of STDs.
