Incidence of syphilis doubles in Maine, state CDC warns

Christopher Lynch, MD Nov. 18, 2010

The number of primary and secondary cases of syphilis recorded in Maine this year is twice the usual number, says the state’s Center for Disease Control and Prevention.

Reportedly, more than 30 cases of syphilis have been diagnosed since January, nearly a third of them among individuals with HIV.

According to the agency, the average number of cases per year is 16. It considers the doubled syphilis rate a cause for concern.

Most of the cases have been linked to risky behavior, mainly anonymous sex set up through social networks, the agency adds. It recommends that clinicians remain aware of the symptoms of syphilis, which include sores, lesions and moist papules, and that Mainers seek out regular STD screening.

Untreated, or "latent," syphilis can result in muscle twitching, paralysis, blindness and dementia. Those who believe they have contracted a sexually transmitted disease may consider using online testing services to establish the state of their sexual health.

Nationally, the CDC records over 13,000 diagnosed cases of syphilis every year.
