Health officials use technology to disseminate sexual health information
Lisa Oldson, MD Aug. 26, 2010
Due to the persistent - and in some parts of the country growing - epidemic of STD infections, public health authorities are coming up with innovative ways of reaching residents with the aim of educating them about sexual health.
While informational campaigns, fairs and free testing days are all important elements of spreading the message, technology is also being increasingly harnessed across the country in hopes of reaching the younger demographics.
For example, The Minnesota Family Planning and STD Hotline - which was launched more than 30 years ago and is supported by the state's Department of Health - has unveiled improvements to its website that will include internet chat and text messaging functions, according to SCTimes.com.
The aim of the project is to enhance the delivery of the hotline's confidential health education information, including medically accurate facts about family planning as well as referrals to affordably priced or free clinics.
Individuals who would like to known their status but are uncomfortable about visiting an STD clinic may consider using online testing services.
