Drew University removes free condom services on campus
Christopher Lynch, MD Oct. 05, 2010
The health services department at Drew University will no longer provide free condoms to the students, following reports thatsome individuals were taking too many at a time. Academic officials also explained that the condom supply was removed as part of the school's recent budget cuts, according to NewsRoomJersey.com.
However, the university has begun to provide residential assistants (RAs) in the dormitories with free condoms, which will be available to students living on campus. However, enrollees have reported discomfort with asking the RAs for the contraceptives, and preferred asking nurses at the student health center, the website reports.
If campuses across the country continue to remove these types of free services, more college and university students may become involved in risky sexual behavior, increasing their exposure to sexual transmitted diseases (STDs). For instance, in 2007, approximately 11,000 people aged 20 to 29 tested positive for HIV/AIDS, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
Young people who have unprotected sex could be putting themselves and their partners at a higher risk of contracting an STD. For those who are concerned about their sexual health, purchasing online testing services may be an option.
