Diagnostic test maker announces new, automated STD exam

Michelle Sobel Jan. 05, 2011

BD Diagnostics, a branch of the medical technology corporation Becton, Dickson and Company, has unveiled a new molecular test for two common sexually transmitted diseases (STDs).

The test, called the BD ProbeTec HSV-1 and HSV-2 Qx Amplified DNA Assays, is an automated testing technology that detects herpes types 1 and 2. It will also have the capability to test for chlamydia and gonorrhea.

By detecting herpes DNA at the molecular level, the BD ProbeTec is expected to have a much higher accuracy than many currently available tests for this disease.

Some common herpes diagnostic exams have false negative rates of up to 25 percent, and others may not differentiate between types 1 and 2.

Herpes type 1 is typically transmitted orally and results in cold sores in and around the mouth, while type 2 causes outbreaks of genital sores.

Testing is an effective method of limiting the spread of STDs. Individuals who are concerned about their sexual health may consider purchasing online testing services.

One in five women and one in nine men in the U.S. between the ages of 14 and 49 has genital herpes, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates.
