Controversial song title prompts negative response from Alabama parents

Christopher Lynch, MD May. 23, 2011

A popular tradition among graduating students is to vote for their favorite songs, movies or books that were produced during the year of their graduation. The results of these polls are then featured in a class yearbook. However, after students voted rap artist Lil' Wayne's song "Gonorrhea" as their favorite song of 2011, parents of the children at Chapman Middle School responded with disapproval, according to a recent article published by WAFF 48 News.

Although the news provider reported that school officials said they have not received any complaints, a number of parents have commented on the issue using Facebook. Some of the adults wrote that they believe administers should have prevented the song title from being published, while others support the decision that students should have the freedom of expression.

Despite the fact that the discussion of sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) is often considered taboo, parents may be surprised to learn that the actual incidence of gonorrhea and other STDs among kids is higher than that of some older age groups.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, adolescents between the ages of 15 and 24 account for nearly half of the more than 19 million new STD cases diagnosed annually in the U.S.
