Condom Miranda takes the stage at University of Florida
Lisa Oldson, MD Oct. 01, 2010
Donned with a vibrant-colored dress, lei and a pocketful of condoms, Condom Miranda recently brought her outrageous, yet informative campaign to the University of Florida (UF). Her speech was part of the school's Sex Talks program, which includes discussions designed to educate UF students, according to The Independent Florida Alligator.
Hosted by the university's Boward Area Council (BAC), the student-run group brought Condom Miranda to the school to make talking about sex entertaining, while ensuring that the safe sex message was clear.
Eleonora Melikstova, a UF student and president of BAC, told the school's newspaper that "there are more pressures in college, and the presentation shows you that you don't have to be abstinent; just do it in a safe way." She added that "when we can relate to a story, we're more likely to listen."
While campus-based sexual health campaigns can prove beneficial for college students, this demographic is still among the largest at-risk populations in the U.S. For instance, each year, for every 100,000 people who are diagnosed with chlamydia, more than 4,200 cases are among those aged 20 to 24, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
