Chlamydia and other STD rates rising
Christopher Lynch, MD Aug. 29, 2011
According to the National Center for Biotechnology Information, chlamydia is sexually transmitted disease that often does not have any visible symptoms. This can make it difficult for a person to know if they have the infection, which is why it's important to get tested regularly and to practice safe sex.
Recently, ABC News in Australia ran an article reporting that many older people are at risk of developing chlamydia and other sexually transmitted diseases. The news source reported that the number of chlamydia cases has doubled in the past five years, and that older adults are particularly susceptible because they do not get tested often enough.
"There is a lot of the information around chlamydia that relates to infertility in the future, so again for older women there may be a sense that it's not relevant for them," said Deborah Bateson, M.D., quoted by the news source.
Communication and knowledge are the keys to avoiding sexually transmitted diseases. Getting tested often and being open with sexual partners can help people remain educated on their sexual health and that of their partner.
