Can sharing a spoon spread herpes?
Michelle Sobel Oct. 04, 2011
Herpes is a common sexually transmitted disease (STD) in America. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports that as many as one in six U.S. residents have contracted the virus. Despite the prevalence of the condition, many people are unaware of how this infection can be spread from one person to another.
The Huffington Post recently ran an article discussing common misconceptions that are associated with this STD. The news provider spoke to dentist Thomas Connelly regarding how oral herpes can be transmitted.
The dental health expert was questioned on if sharing lipstick, forks or other items can pass on the disease.
"Not only can you transmit herpes but almost any other sickness that can be transferred via secretions or saliva. This includes mononucleosis (sometimes called "the kissing disease"), colds, flus and even hepatitis," said Connelly, quoted by the news provider.
Connelly's statements suggest that everyone, regardless of sexual history, should be cautious regarding herpes and should get tested regularly. The CDC states that the best way to avoid getting and STD is through practicing safer sex and using a condom, even during oral sex.
