APHA calls for mandatory condom use among adult film actors
Michelle Sobel Mar. 21, 2011
The American Public Health Association (APHA) is now one of many other health organizations that are recommending that mandatory condom regulations be enforced among actors in the pornography business.
Following reports of several adult film actors contracting HIV, APHA released a statement suggesting that health officials in California and Florida take measures to ensure that pornography production sets are safe for workers and that the directors of the movies require condom use for all employees.
According to an article by News Medical, pornography workers in California are about 10 times more likely to acquire a sexually transmitted disease (STD) than other residents of the state.
The news source also noted that many adult film actors suffer from multiple STDs and that the Los Angeles Department of Public Health discovered some cases of performers who had more than four separate infections in one year.
APHA's statement suggests that the regular use of condoms among these individuals will significantly reduce the spread of STDs, including HIV.
Any person who has sex with multiple partners or unprotected intercourse may have an increased risk of contracting STDs.
Anyone who would like to be screened for the sexual infections may consider using confidential online testing services.
