Individuals who discover that they are infected with a sexually transmitted disease (STD) need to inform all of their sexual partners that they should get tested, and should then abstain from sex until they are healthy again. Unfortunately, not everyone follows this protocol, which is how one person can end up spreading an STD to a number of unsuspecting people. The recent syphilis outbreak among adult film stars in Los Angeles is an example of how this can happen, since one man has now taken responsibility for causing this STD to spread.

According to Adult Video News, a man who goes by the name "Mr. Marcus" has admitted that he is likely responsible for the syphilis outbreak. According to the adult film star, he discovered that he was infected with syphilis and sought treatment. He was given penicillin to cure the STD, and was then told to wait a week or more before engaging in sexual activity - a suggestion he ignored.

"Once I did that shot I felt pretty confident. Every doctor I talked to up to that point said 'you get the shot. That's it.' If you had the syphilis in your system a lot longer than that you need three shots. But based on what he determined from my blood and looking at my symptoms, he said the one shot was good enough. So I did the one shot and I didn't have to do anything else," Marcus told the news source.

However, the actor quickly learned that he should have waited before engaging in sexual activity when several of his co-stars tested positive for syphilis.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, late-stage syphilis can cause severe damage to the internal organs and may be fatal. This is why it's important for people to practice safer sex, and visit STD testing centers to ensure that they do not have this sexual infection.
