Adult film performers may set a good example for some safe sex practices

Lisa Oldson, MD May. 19, 2011

Although it may sound counterintuitive, some health experts believe that professionals in the adult film industry may be practicing safer sex than many sexually active non-performers. In a recent article published by CNN Health, two pornography actors with the stage names Ryan and Wylde explained that individuals in their profession seek testing for sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) once every month and consistently use condoms, even during sexual activity outside of work.

"Before you start shooting [a film], you go online to see the other person's test results. Or sometimes on set, before you start, they show you the results on paper," Wylde told the news provider.

She noted that she has never contracted an STD, which she attributed to diligent condom use and knowing that her professional partners had been screened prior to engaging in sex acts.

Dr. Craig Strafford told the news source that these practices are a good example for any sexually active individual to follow when they are with a new partner.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention states that consistent and correct condom use is one of the best ways to avoid contracting an STD.
