Adult film industry supports mandatory monthly STD testing
Christopher Lynch, MD Nov. 10, 2010
In the fourth in a series of public meetings in California, representatives of the adult film lobby have proposed that the porn industry continue its monthly mandatory STD testing for adult film stars, according to the publication In These Times.
The suggestion comes after an industry-wide HIV scare, which began after a porn star in clinical treatment was diagnosed with the virus, ITT further reports.
Two of the porn industry’s biggest production companies shut down in order to conduct multiple rounds of STD testing, which ITT says came back entirely negative.
Now, the adult film industry’s primary lobby group has reaffirmed the efficacy of tests, which the independent news service says many industry professionals must submit to each month.
The clinical test checks for gonorrhea, HIV and chlamydia.
The test is one of a number of publicly available options, including in-person and online testing services.
Individuals concerned that they have contracted HIV or other sexually transmitted diseases may find a viable health option in online testing.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that over 56,000 Americans contract HIV every year.
